Recently, the media has shown a lot of interest in cannabis use among Seniors. However, there is not a lot of research on this topic. This study helped us learn more about the reasons people might use cannabis for the first time when they are 65 years old or older. We also wanted to learn more about their experiences of using cannabis, for medical or recreational purposes, in later life. .

Support, Education, networking & Sustained Engagement (SENSE): Knowledge-to-Action with Families of the Frail Elderly Living in Residential Long-term Care.

This pilot study is proposing to co-develop a workshop series with families to provide education, peer support and networking opportunities for families of residents living in residential long-term care facilities. The goal is to foster family members inclusion and improve their involvement in the care of residents.

AWAKE During Surgery: Exploring Relational Ethics in the Operating Room.

The Transcatherter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure, which is beginning to be performed on a subset of patients who are awake. Many of these patients are older adults. As this is a relatively new procedure, little is known about the patient's experience of being awake during the procedure. This study aims to examine that.

Family Councils in British Columbia's Residential Long-Term Care Sector.

Families can be very engaged in their loved ones’ care. While individual family members’ involvement in residential long-term care has been examined, there is very little research about how Family Councils can be used as a way to include family members in decisions regarding the quality of life of residents. The purpose of this study is to understand how Family Councils are currently used in BC in order to help inform future policy in this area.

Geriatric Education & Training (GET) Program for Acute Care Nursing.

Even though older adults are increasingly the main population accessing hospital service most nurses have not received sufficient formal education and training specific to this population. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate the Geriatric Education and Training (GET) Program for Acute Care Nursing and then share the GET Program with hospitals across BC.

Helping Elderly Adults in Rural and Remote Areas Stay @ Home.

The aim of this study is to better understand the needs of older adult patients and caregivers during the first year after a TAVI procedure. We are also interested specifically in understanding the experiences of patients who live further away from these specialist heart centres compared to those who live close by.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Study.

The TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is an minimally invasive intervention for older adults with severe aortic stenosis who are not a good fit for open heart surgery. In this study we examine the medical, functional, and social needs of older adults who live in the community, and who are undergoing the TAVI procedure in Vancouver.

Seek to Understand: Mobility and Physical Activity of Older Men

The study is an applied ethnography that uses a combination of interview, observation, and visual methods in order to obtain an in-depth contextualized understanding of older men’s experiences of mobility in their everyday activities, and what these experiences mean to them.
